Roadblock suspect pleads not guilty, probation denied

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The suspect who was allegedly behind a five-hour barricade at a crowded Honolulu store will not be granted probation.

Karon Hayes, 34, is charged with felony criminal damage to property for allegedly throwing liquor bottles and setting off a fire extinguisher at the Don Quixote store on Kaheka Street, causing more than $30,000 in damage.

He then barricaded himself in a warehouse for five hours, triggering the evacuation of shoppers and employees, police said.

Hayes appeared virtually in court Thursday and entered a not guilty plea.

Hayes’ attorney argued for his supervised release, telling the judge: “He committed a minor misdemeanor while living in Hawaii, but other than that he has no criminal record, has not committed any prior felonies, and I believe Mr. Hayes will do well.” Probation candidate.”

The prosecution disagreed.

“The defendant entered Don Quixote, where a group of employees and civilian customers were present, took a lighter, entered the drinking area and tried to set fire to a beer. He stole bottles from the shelves, threw the bottles at people, and then behaved inappropriately towards police officers, using slurs and other offensive language,” the prosecutor said.

Ultimately, Judge Ronald Johnson agreed with the prosecution, saying that “supervised release is not appropriate for society.”

Hayes’ bail was approved at $11,000.

His hearing will be held on February 24.
