SMITHFIELD – The gas leak at Smithfield Town Center was contained Tuesday morning. At approximately 9:25 a.m., the Smithfield Fire Department responded to the 100 block of N. Fifth Street.

N. Fifth Avenue between Market Street and Bridge Street was closed as a precaution until Piedmont Natural Gas could intervene and seal the leak, according to Fire Chief Jeremey Daughtry.

Authorities said the leak was caused by a construction team working in the area.

The road was closed to traffic for approximately 3 hours.

No injuries were reported.
