LANSING, Mich. (WILX/Gray News) – 4 people died and 17 people were injured when a truck crashed into vehicles stuck in traffic late on Saturday night.

The crash occurred on I-96 in Ingham County, Michigan, around 11:43 p.m.

According to Michigan State Police, the westbound lanes of I-96 were closed while crews installed power lines across the highway. When police reopened the lanes, several vehicles were still stopped after a truck crashed into the stopped vehicles.

Police estimate 15 vehicles were involved in the crash.

According to authorities, the truck driver did not see the traffic stop and was unable to stop in time.

The truck and some other vehicles caught fire.

17 injured people were taken to hospitals with serious injuries.

I-96 near M-52 is expected to be closed indefinitely.
