A police officer was killed in a suicide attack in Iran; an Al Qaeda-linked organization is probably behind the attack.

A suicide bomber killed a local police officer and injured another in the southern Iranian port city that is home to a large Sunni Muslim community, local media reported Sunday.

Javan Daily, a newspaper close to the country’s powerful Revolutionary Guard, said the attacker stopped Captain Mojtaba Shahid’s car and detonated his vest in Bandar Lengeh in Hormozgan province on Saturday evening.

The newspaper described the attack as an act of terrorism and reported that Shahid’s assistant, who was in the vehicle, was hospitalized in critical condition.

The city, located about 1,000 kilometers south of the capital Tehran, has no recent history of terrorism.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but some local news sources claimed that the Al Qaeda-linked Sunni terrorist organization Ansar Al Furqan was behind the attack.
