Authorities investigating gas leak after family of four found dead in holiday tragedy

Authorities in New Hampshire said the four people found dead in a home from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning were from Newton, Massachusetts.

New Hampshire State Fire Marshal identified the deceased Matthew Goldstein as; 52, Lyla Goldstein; 54, Valerie Goldstein; 22 and Violet Goldstein, 19.

“The New Hampshire Chief Medical Examiner’s Office has determined that Matthew Goldstein’s cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning and results are pending,” a statement said. “The cause and manner of death of Lyla Goldstein, Valerie Goldstein and Violet Goldstein are not yet known.”

Matthew Goldstein was teaching school in Brookline.

Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the carbon monoxide leak, the statement said. They were focusing on the home’s gas heating system.

The four were found dead on Christmas. When he did not come to the meeting, his relatives asked for a health check.

Investigators said the home in Wakefield, New Hampshire, had no working carbon monoxide alarms.

Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas that can cause illness and death. Fire prevention experts urge people to install and maintain carbon monoxide detectors in their homes.

Carbon monoxide alarms and smoke alarms are two different things and both should be used.
