Akron daughter convicted of killing her mother may soon face retrial

SUMMIT COUNTY, Ohio (WOIO) – A 24-year-old Akron girl convicted of murdering her mother could soon get a second trial after the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned her conviction on Thursday.

The appeals court ruled that Sydney Powell’s due process rights were violated because her lawyers were not allowed to present a rebuttal witness.

On March 3, 2020, Powell stabbed his mother, 50-year-old Brenda Powell, to death in their Akron home during an argument.

Powell’s trial began on September 6, 2023, and the jury reached its verdict on September 20, 2023.

The jury found Powell guilty of murder, aggravated assault and tampering with evidence.

He pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

In September 2023, Sydney Powell was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years by Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Kelly McLaughlin.

Powell remains incarcerated at the Ohio Correctional Facility for Women in Marysville.

There are no new court dates scheduled at this time.
