7 suspects arrested for illegal firearms, including 2 linked to national murder in Mozambique

The South African Police Service (Saps) has made a number of arrests related to illegal firearms offences, including two suspects involved in a murder case in Limpopo.

The two men were arrested on Christmas Eve after police received a tip-off about suspects allegedly involved in a deadly house robbery in Mogorwane village in the Sekhukhune district.

Unlicensed weapons seized in deadly house robbery

The robbery, which occurred on December 4, led to the murder of 32-year-old Mozambican national Samson Sithole.

Two arrested for illegal firearms in Western Cape

Two men were detained in the Western Cape on Monday for possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition in unrelated incidents.

In the first case, police carried out stop-and-search operations near Sheffield Road in Cape Town at around 10.45pm.

Officers responded to a complaint that the occupants of a VW Polo with personalized number plates were blackmailing spaza shop owners.

“They spotted his vehicle near Lower Junction Road and started pursuing it. During the high-speed car chase, the driver of the VW Polo stopped suddenly and the passenger got out of the vehicle and fled to the informal settlement, with police members pursuing him on foot.

In another incident, police officers assigned to Gugulethu acted on information about a person in possession of a firearm.

More weapons seized in Muizenberg and Gansbaai

Western Cape police have reported further success in seizing unlicensed firearms and ammunition, resulting in new arrests.

On Monday, December 23, Muizenberg police executed a search warrant at a home on Rose Street, Hillview, at approximately 9 p.m.

“The search of the entire building and its contents was successful, with officers seizing 100 rounds of 9mm ammunition.

“The person of interest who was present during the search failed to provide a valid license for the ammunition, which led to his arrest for possession of unlicensed ammunition,” Swartbooi said.

On Tuesday, Gansbaai police arrested a man who was patrolling Kano Street.

“Members located a man matching the description, searched him and seized a handgun with ammunition. “They detained the adult male for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.”

The suspects are expected to appear before the Hermanus and Wynberg magistrates’ courts.
