Experts from the Institute for the Study of War think tank said there are signs that the Kremlin is trying to dictate the terms of possible “peace” negotiations with Ukraine before Donald Trump takes office in the USA.

“The fact that the Kremlin is trying to set the terms of negotiations strongly suggests that Russia’s goals have not changed and still amount to the complete surrender of Ukraine,” the group’s analysts say.

“The Kremlin does not appear willing to make any more concessions to the incoming Trump administration than it has to the current administration.”

Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov claimed yesterday that the start of Trump’s presidency will not fundamentally change the US attitude towards Ukraine.

Ukrainian officials say Russian forces have infiltrated the outskirts of the northeastern city

Ukrainian officials said it was the first time a Russian strike group had briefly entered the outskirts of Kupiansk since Moscow forces fled the area in 2022.

“They partially entered the suburbs, the industrial zone, and were destroyed by our troops… Attacks were carried out with heavy armored vehicles, and attempts were made to bring in infantry,” the chief of the city’s military administration said.

Official Andriy Besedin said the city, now just 2.5 miles from the front line, was under constant bombardment and the population had fallen to 3,000 people and had been asked to evacuate.
