Video: Jewelery store owner killed in armed robbery in Pietermaritzburg – LNN

A Pietermaritzburg businessman died yesterday from gunshot wounds sustained in an armed robbery at a family business in a local shopping centre.

The man, whose identity is being kept secret as his relatives have not yet been notified, died in hospital shortly after several gunmen attacked the jewelery shop at Park Lane Center in the CBD. He was shot in the stomach 4 times.

Pietermaritzburg police spokesman Sergeant Sifiso Gwala said preliminary reports showed the man was shot four times in the chest.

Gwala said a murder charge and a case of attempted business robbery have been registered for investigation.

“The man was in a direct confrontation with two armed robbers, aged 32 and 36, while he was in the store with his mother. The search for the third suspect continues.

“The deceased managed to retrieve his firearm when the two suspects were distracted when his mother ran to the door to prevent a third suspect from entering the store. One of the suspects was shot in the head and the other was shot in the arm and side.

“They are both under police protection in the hospital,” says Gwala.
