No bail for Mpumalanga priest accused of raping young congregation – LNN

No bail for Mpumalanga priest accused of raping young congregation – LNN

The priest accused of raping a 16-year-old girl who came to his house to pray was denied bail when he appeared in the Sabie Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

The 46-year-old priest, who could not be identified to protect the young man’s identity, was detained until his next hearing on January 6.

This happened after the NPA successfully opposed his release on bail. The incident allegedly occurred at his residence in Sabie in October.

“The court was of the opinion that the defendant had failed to prove exceptional circumstances that allowed him to be released on bail. It was determined that release on bail could lead to disruption of public order. He may interfere with witnesses and even escape from the hearing,” says NPA provincial spokesperson Monica Nyuswa.

While announcing the decision regarding the priest’s bail application, the court stated that it was claimed that the priest took advantage of the girl because he was entrusted to him as a spiritual father by his congregation.

The priest was arrested last month on allegations that he went to pray at the girl’s residence because of the wound on her leg.

“When she arrived at the defendant’s residence, the defendant allegedly met her, kissed her and pushed her into the bedroom before raping her. The incident came to light when the victim told her friend at school, who shared the same experience as the victim, and the situation was reported to the police,” explains Nyuswa.

When police arrested the priest, he was found in possession of an allegedly unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The priest faces charges of rape and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

Nyuswa said the NPA and the police will cooperate to ensure that ongoing investigations are concluded so that the matter can be taken to court.
