Roland Wycherley attempts to resign after Shrewsbury Town chairman rebuffs

The president of almost 30 years dismissed head coach Hurst and assistant coach Chris Doig after a poor start to the season.

In a previous statement made by the club, it was stated that an emergency board meeting would be held on Sunday morning after the team lost 2-1 to Salford in the FA Cup.

And at that meeting Wycherley tried to resign as chairman, but this was later rejected.

He said: “I offered my immediate resignation as chairman at our emergency Board meeting this morning but this was rejected by the board because despite all the positive changes we have made to reduce losses – without my existing financial support – we would not be able to continue to deliver on our commitments.

“As a result of this meeting, we are truly disappointed to have to let Paul Hurst and Chris Doig go, as I was personally desperate for them to succeed, but if my 28 years at the helm have taught me anything, it is that nothing happens.” It can be guaranteed in football.

“While we maintain a budget consistent with our income as a club, League One’s external finances have changed immeasurably, so I am more determined than ever to find a new name.

“Over the past two seasons, I have made a statement to my Chairman of the General Assembly in which I said that this was the most challenging period of my tenure. This was unfortunately due to the previous management, in whom I had confidence, who did not guide the club in the direction I had planned.

“I recently appointed my new Vice President and new Board of Directors, and we are already making great strides to return to a sustainable position while securing new investments.”

Wycherley said they were in advanced talks with a party that wanted to buy the club.

He said: “As we move forward, I would like to reiterate that we are in advanced discussions to secure my succession with a party that I believe will be best for this football club.”
