Kamala’s mother, Shyamala Gopalan, became a breast cancer researcher and contributed to the development of treatments for the disease.

Gopalan met Jamaican immigrant Donald Harris at the University of California, Berkeley, where he came to study economics in the 1960s. Kamala Harris was born in 1964.

After her parents divorced when she was five, Kamala and her sister Maya were raised mostly by Shyamala.

“He taught us to never complain about injustice, but to do something about it,” Harris said.

Harris uses stories from her childhood to make a more personal connection with voters and highlights how she plans to work for middle-class families that reflect her own upbringing.

The US Vice President often describes how his mother “worked long hours” and then drank tea late into the night “with a pile of bills in front of her.” Harris also says her mother keeps a strict budget.

She also explained that she took care of her sick mother, prepared meals and chose clothes that would not irritate her skin. Shyamala passed away in 2009 after a battle with colon cancer.
