(Society)Some of those responsible for Samsung Electronics’ CO₂ leak accident are found not guilty in the second trial.

Some Samsung Electronics employees who were convicted in the first trial in connection with the carbon dioxide leak at Samsung Electronics’ Giheung factory that killed three people in 2018 were found not guilty by the appeals court.

Suwon District Court overturned the lower court’s conviction and acquitted two Samsung Electronics employees of professional negligence and other charges.

At the first hearing, they were sentenced to 8 months of imprisonment, 2 years of supervised release, 6 months of imprisonment and 1 year of supervised release, respectively.

While eight employees and subcontractors of Samsung Electronics were sentenced to 10 months in prison with a fine of 3 million won and two years of probation, respectively, two Samsung Electronics employees and one subcontractor were acquitted in the appeal case, just as in the original trial.

The fine for Samsung Electronics, a company suspected of violating the Fire Establishment Law, was reduced from 5 million won in the first trial to 3 million won in the second trial.

In September 2018, a carbon dioxide leak occurred at Samsung Electronics’ Giheung factory in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, killing two people and injuring one, including a partner company employee in his 50s.
