Addressing affordable housing is a priority

The affordable housing sector in Puerto Rico faces major availability challenges, which can be identified as one of the main reasons why fewer and fewer young people want to live and reproduce in our country. This is a very important issue that requires urgent attention from the authorities.

The latest sign of this serious problem was provided this week by a study commissioned by the Department of Housing by professors at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR), which found that the availability of subsidized housing on the island is only sufficient for 20 people. Percentage of families whose income level qualifies.

This includes public housing, called Schedule 8, and other housing benefits. The waiting list at the Housing Department is almost 28,000 families. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, only 127,520 housing units are available for the 566,342 families who qualify for subsidized housing based on their income.
