CentralPa. Under a freeze warning on Monday

At 2:56 a.m. Sunday, the National Weather Service issued a freeze warning for Dauphin, Cumberland, Adams, York and Lancaster counties, effective from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Monday.

“Temperatures below freezing are expected to drop to 30 degrees,” the weather service says.

“Frost and freezing conditions can kill tender outdoor plants if left exposed,” the weather service explains. “Those with agricultural interests must protect sensitive vegetation. Rural valley areas will experience the coldest temperatures. Take steps now to protect young plants and vegetation from the cold.”

What to do if there is a freeze watch or warning

Frost warnings are issued from May to October, when low temperatures are expected to be 29-32 degrees (but can be extended if necessary). If temperatures have the potential to drop below these thresholds, freeze monitoring can be done several days in advance.

According to the weather service, if a frost warning or watch has been issued for your area, there is little you can do to protect plants. If you can move your sensitive plants indoors, do so because freezing will likely kill them, depending on the severity of conditions.
