Shootings in Chicago this weekend: At least 11 shootings, 2 fatal, in gun violence in city, police department says

Police said officers exchanged gunfire with an armed suspect after responding to the scene of an earlier shooting.

Chicago police said a 39-year-old victim was shot while walking in the 2600 block of West Farwell Avenue around 9:35 a.m. An armed attacker approached the victim from behind and shot him in the shoulder. While the suspect escaped, surrounding neighbors immediately helped the victim, and police and paramedics arrived at the scene.

Around 9:55 a.m., the 23-year-old male gunman emerged from an alley and opened fire on officers and paramedics, police said. Chicago police officials said the suspect continued to exchange gunfire with officers for about two minutes.

The gunman was shot multiple times by officers in the 6800 block of North Washtenaw Avenue, police said. Officers assisted the man and he was taken to a local hospital, where he was initially listed in critical condition.

The 39-year-old victim was treated for a gunshot wound and released from the hospital, police said. The gender and identity of the victim are not yet known.

CPD said no officers or CFD members were injured in the incident. Further information was not immediately available. CPD and COPA continue to investigate.
