(Society)Debunked death case of the army…Court “State pays compensation to grieving families”

A court decision was issued that the state must pay compensation to the grieving family of late boss Yeom Soon-deok, whose cause of death could not be determined for more than a decade due to the army’s inadequate investigation.

The Seoul Central District Court ruled that the defendant must pay a total of 90 million won in the compensation lawsuit filed by Yeom’s grieving family against the state.

The court found that the military police and police unreasonably or inadequately searched for key physical evidence in the early stages of the incident, making it too insufficient to obtain evidence.

He also acknowledged the state’s responsibility for compensation, saying that the culprit and the murder had not been correctly identified so far.

In December 2001, Army Sergeant Yeom died on his way home after drinking with members of his unit.

The case subsequently remained unsolved and a belated re-investigation was launched, with police detaining people who had been drinking together in the unit as suspects.

However, an investigation was not launched due to reasons such as lack of evidence, and First Class Yeom’s grieving family filed a lawsuit against the state in September 2018, claiming that the investigation by the military police and police was inadequate.
