Colorado cardiologist and serial rapist Stephen Matthews sentenced to 158 years in prison

A Denver cardiologist was sentenced to 158 years in prison for drugging and raping several Colorado women he met on dating apps.

At his hearing Friday, the sentencing judge scolded 36-year-old “narcissistic monster” and former doctor Stephen Matthews for luring 10 women to his West Denver mansion, mixing their drinks and then raping eight of them between 2019 and 2023. According to CBS News.

“The evidence in this case is overwhelming,” Judge Eric Johnson said, addressing the convicted creep directly. “You have made this world smaller.”

Matthews’ victims and their families applauded the life sentence; Nearly two dozen people, including survivors of his heinous attacks, read emotional victim testimonies in court.

“We are now a mighty army of survivors and you are nothing,” said one of his victims, adding that the former doctor was a “narcissistic monster” and “serial rapist.”

CBS said a jury convicted Matthews in August of raping women he met on dating apps such as Hinge and Tinder.

While most of Matthews’ victims said they could remember only a small part of what happened after drinking with the vile doctor, some testified that when they came to they found themselves naked in bed with him.

The women told the court that the defendant would then “gasm” them into thinking it was their fault what happened, for example by saying they drank too much or couldn’t hold down the drink, the station reported.

They also talked about how his crimes left them struggling with anxiety, depression, paranoia and other issues.

“You drugged me, raped me, and manipulated me into thinking it was my fault,” one of his victims said.

The mother of one victim added: “What you have done is despicable; you have given these women and their families life sentences.”

Matthews has not spoken out about his sentence, although many victims accused him of showing no remorse for his actions.

His attorney, Douglas Cohen, said Matthews remained silent because he planned to appeal the judge’s decision.

Matthews’ parents pleaded with the court to be lenient on their son, who they say is a narcissistic alcoholic but can be rehabilitated.

“I love you always and no matter what,” Matthews’ mother said, begging the judge not to “throw away the key.”

CBS said Prosecutor Victoria Kelley was far less empathetic, saying she was certain there were “dozens or more” victims.

The judge echoed this, telling the victims directly: “You were believed; that’s what the verdict said.”

Denver District Attorney Beth McCann later called Matthews’ crimes despicable and said she hoped the sentence “provides some measure of comfort to all of Mr. Matthews’ victims whose courage in coming forward led to this successful outcome.”
