Georgia’s pro-Western opposition opposes key election results that will determine EU path

Associated Press

TBILISI, Georgia (AP) — Georgia’s pro-Western opposition objected to the results of parliamentary elections after officials said Sunday that the ruling party is leading the critical vote that could decide whether the country remains on track to join the European Union or falls under Russian rule. The Central Election Commission said Sunday that Georgian Dream won 54.8 percent of the vote and nearly 100 percent of the votes were counted. Preliminary figures show it was the highest turnout since 2012, when the ruling party was first elected. Georgian election observers, who deployed thousands across the country to monitor the vote, reported numerous violations and said the results “did not comply with the will of the Georgian people.” .”
