Teenager arrested for drunkenness and raping child in Bengal’s Gaighata

Kolkata, November 14 (IANS): Gaighata Police in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district arrested a youth who allegedly raped an underage girl after making her drunk on Thursday morning.

State police sources said that although the rape incident took place on the night of November 10, the victim’s parents lodged a formal complaint at the Gaighata police station on Wednesday night, following which the accused youth was arrested.

Following the complaint registered with the police, the victim went to his home to attend his birthday party upon the invitation of the suspect. It was alleged that the suspect mixed alcohol into the soft drinks he consumed.

It was claimed that the suspect raped her while she was drunk.

The parents also complained that when she came to her senses, the accused threatened her with dire consequences if she revealed the matter to anyone. So the victim, who was initially in a state of shock, did not disclose the matter to her family.

Finally, on Wednesday night, he told his family about the situation, and they immediately went to the police station and filed a complaint. Acting on this complaint, Gaighata Police officers arrested the accused youth early on Thursday morning.

A case has been registered under various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act. The accused teenager will appear in district court on Thursday afternoon and the prosecutor will ask for him to be taken into police custody.

This is the second report of rape of a minor girl in Gaighata in the last 11 days. On November 3, another youth from Gaighata, a family member of a local Trinamool Congress leader and famous for his evening processions in the area, was arrested on charges of kidnapping and raping a minor girl.

The state of West Bengal has been in the news for the last three months due to repeated reports of rape and rape murders, with most of the victims being underage.

The most talked about tragedy in this regard was the gruesome rape and murder of a resident doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata in the hospital premises in August this year.
