Frost warning issued for Passaic County on Sunday

At 3:42 p.m. Saturday, a freeze warning was issued by the National Weather Service for Passaic County, effective from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday.

Meteorology says, “Temperatures dropping to 33 degrees will cause frost formation.”

“Frost can damage sensitive outdoor vegetation. If left exposed, sensitive outdoor plants may die,” the weather service explains. “Take action now to protect light plants from the cold.”

What to do if there is a freeze warning

Frost warnings are issued from May to October (but may be extended if necessary) when temperatures, winds, and sky cover are suitable for frost formation. This most likely occurs when the temperature is 36 degrees or lower. In some cases the frost is severe enough to end the growing season, in which case it is referred to as a ‘killing frost’.

If a frost warning has been issued for your area, according to the weather service, cover tender plants before sunset or move plants indoors overnight if possible, so they can help retain heat near the plants.
