A railway employee died after being trapped between engine bumpers and a passenger bus during a shunting operation at Barauni Junction station in Bihar’s Begusarai district on Saturday, officials said.

A bumper is a shock-absorbing device located at each end of a train’s engine and passenger carriage, designed to reduce the impact of collisions between bogies.

An official from the East Central Railway said rules governing such an operation must have been violated, leading to this “unfortunate incident” and an investigation has been ordered.

The deceased was identified as Amar Kumar (25), a resident of Samastipur district.

Kumar’s family claimed that he died due to negligence of railway staff.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident took place when the Lucknow Junction-Barauni Express was maneuvering on platform number 5.

Kumar was killed after being pinned between the engine bumpers and a passenger bus.

The video clip of the man’s body stuck between the bumpers went viral on social media.

Family members of the deceased came to the scene and said that they would not allow the authorities to conduct an autopsy until action was taken against the erring railway personnel.

The issue was resolved after Vivek Bhushan Sood, Regional Railway Manager (DRM) of Sonpur division, reached the spot and calmed down the agitated family members.

East Central Railway’s Director of Public Relations (CPRO) Sharswati Chandra told PTI that the incident took place at Barauni station in the morning.

“This is a very unfortunate incident and also alarming. The rules laid down for such an operation must have been violated,” said Chandra.

The CPRO said that a high-level investigation has been ordered to find out the reason behind the incident and once the investigation is completed, stringent action will be taken against the erring railway employees.
