Senior citizen accused of cheating and theft in Sibu

SIBU: A 64-year-old man from Taman Matang Jaya in Kuching was charged with cheating and theft in the Magistrate’s Court here on Tuesday

Dahlan Wong allegedly deceived Empilut@Philip Empari (70) by dishonestly convincing the victim to give him RM15,500 to avoid land tax and the documentation fee for the land lease agreement he deceptively offered to the victim from the Sibu Water Board.

He allegedly committed the crime at the Hong Leong Bank branch in Jalan Ulu Lanang on August 22.

In accordance with Article 420 of the Criminal Code, which deals with fraud, the charge provides for imprisonment of not more than 10 years, flogging and a fine upon conviction.

Dahlan and two others still at large were also accused of fraudulently receiving RM10,000 from 70-year-old Setia Chaon without her consent at Maybank Sibu Branch at 12.51am on August 26.

The defendant understood the charges read by the interpreter, but no plea was recorded.

Magistrate Oon Kork Chern allowed the defendants to be released on bail of RM10,000 and RM8,000 respectively, and the decision was made on November 26.

The case was filed while Dahlan was not represented, ASP Siti Mariyah Dahari said. -Bernama
